Smoke smell in apartment

A family of smokers moved out and left an apartment with the smell of tobacco smell. It is really bad. Is there a particular type of paint that we can use? We did paint, but still the smell is there. We have done everything - several cleaning jobs, redoing floors, changing filters and light bulbs, airing it out - the smell just lingers.
