Use of Secuity Deposit

Hello Forum.  I rented my first property, and received 1 1/2 months rent for Security Deposit.  My question is what authority I have over this money, particularly if there are unpaid bills at time of lease end.  For example, $500 in upaid electric bills.  Can I subtract the amount from the security deposit?    Thanks for the guidance.  Keith in Michigan.
