Showing a property

Is it common (or best) practice to find out the name and perhaps a phone number for someone who requests a showing before agreeing to one?

It is always good to start verifying possible tenants asap. This is also good for safety and helping protect yourself, current tenants that may be in the unit and the rental itself.
