Addendum amendment vs new lease for adding a roommate - CA

My tenants in California want to add a new roommate. Should I create an addendum to amend the existing lease or create a new lease? Which one is legally stronger? If I create a new lease, do I have to officially return the deposit and ask the tenants to pay the new deposit? Or can the tenants and I agree to transfer the deposit to the new lease?

Do a new lease, check out the roommate addendum on here and add that to the lease. I'd put into the lease that the deposit from original lease is held for new lease.
