Renters Insurance question

A tenant vacated one of our rental homes and cause major damage over and above the security deposit.  We were told by our insurance agent that we should require renters insurance.  Does renters insurance cover damages caused by the tenant? We would want to be named as additional insured as well.  Please advise.
