eviction of tenant

when i send the first past due notice    (2 payments past due) how many days do i give them to pay and do i need to send the letters registered. there are 2 tenants on the lease. do i send them each a notice..? I have talked to them by phone on several occasions and made one house call. 3 times they have promised to pay and broken their promise. thanx for any help
