Acceptable ratio of prospective tenants income to rent/lease payments

Is there an acceptable percentage that I should look for of how much a tenant earns to the rent/lease payment? Something like no more that 25% of their income...

I was always taught to use 25% or rent should = weekly gross pay or less.
