The previous owner of the apartment complex has some 16 year old leases. There is a start date to the lease but no time frame (ex.: 6 month lease). What should we do about this?

You need to check with your state regarding landlord-tenant regs. Here in Alabama you give thirty day notice in writing of changes. I would think your tenants signing new contractoral lease agreements would fall under "change" category. (lol) Oh, just thought; here, after the fulfillment of the first twelve months the lease "rolls" to monthly, even if they dont sign a new document, they are bound by the original. But, as I first stated check with the state you live in.
